Detainees at Tasmania’s youth detention centre have been rewarded for good behaviour with a visit from champion boxer, Daniel Geale.
Geale was invited to visit the Ashley Youth Detention Centre at Deloraine as a positive role model for the 29 detainees spending Christmas in detention this year.
Geale gave a motivational speech, signed autographs and posed for photos.
He says he can relate to the detainees.
“I was in a little bit of the same position as some of the kids here and I was just trying to tell them there are a lot of opportunities out there.”
“All they have to do is set goals,” he said.
Ashley’s manager Bill Smith says the detainees deserved a Christmas treat this year.
“It’s been a really good year and we hope that that will continue,” he said.
Mr Smith says there have been no escapes, violence, or attacks on staff in the past 12 months.
Admissions and recidivism have also dropped.
