WORLD champion boxer Daniel Geale will receive Camden’s top civic honour at next year’s Australia Day festivities.
Geale, who beat German Felix Sturm in September to unify the IBA and WBA middleweight championships, will be given the key to Camden on January 26 despite being stripped of the WBA title last week after failing to meet challenger rules.
Camden Liberal Mayor Lara Symkowiak said giving Geale the key to Camden was the best way to honour a local champion.
Given Daniel was the first Australian-born boxer to unify the titles, this is the perfect opportunity to celebrate, Handing over the key to the city is a first for Camden and will make for a fantastic Australia Day.
Geale said he was honoured to receive the key. “It means a lot to be recognised in this way and I’m looking forward to the day.”
